diverse team 20160414D.R.E.A.M.S (Developing Real Education/Employment Aimed at Maintaining Stability) is designed to be an innovative intentional approach to preparing youth who are aging out of foster care to live the lives that they DREAM of. Our program will assist young adults {18-24} who are in extended foster care or previously aged out of foster care and enrolled in the PEES (Post Secondary Education Services and Support) program. Some homeless and other youth will be considered based on certain circumstances.

Over 23,000 youth age out of foster care every year with no idea of where they are going in life. When these young people age out of foster care they are not prepared for being on their own. They don't have the luxury of family support or parents to catch them when they fall while trying to figure out adult responsibilities. This is a fearful time for many of them. According to the Child Welfare League of America, approximately 37% do not have a high school diploma when they leave foster care, 56% are unemployed, and 25% become homeless within one year.  It is our goal to eliminate the fear of the unknown for these young people.

dreams collage 1 origOnly 1 out of every 2 foster youth who age out of foster care will have some kind of gainful employment by age 24. There is a less than 3% chance for youth who have aged out of foster care to earn a college degree at any point in their life. 7 out of 10 girls who age out of foster care will become pregnant before the age of 21. About 1 in 4 youth who age out of the foster care system will not graduate from high school or be able to pass their GED. 1 out of every 2 youth that age out of foster care will develop substance dependence. This is unacceptable!

The D.R.E.A.M.S program will give them the opportunity to make a positive transition into adulthood with support and guidance from caring adults. Each young person is unique, with unique needs and dreams. To ensure a smooth transition, each youth is matched with a mentor that will help them understand the importance of building meaningful positive relationships with adults and their peers. They are also expected to give back to the community (pay it forward).

This innovative program provides dorm-style housing to encourage good study habits, limited transportation, academic support, life skills and life coaching, trauma groups, and individualized goal setting. We focus on seven major areas which include:

1) GED or Post-secondary education
2) Vocational training and/or employment
3) Financial literacy and budgeting
4) Accessing and managing health and mental health care
5) Establishing permanent relationships with supportive adults
6) Establishing a community or faith-based support system
7) Securing safe, stable, and permanent affordable housing
